metrorail

So Houston Metro is finally testing the trains up in my neighborhood. Apparently they've been testing them down by the Astrodome for a few weeks now. I heard the first one go by my apartment building on Monday evening (it's pretty quiet, but they've had automobiles with sirens running alongside right now, probably because drivers aren't used to seeing trains on the street in Houston) but didn't see one of the trains until last night. The stations aren't completed yet, but they're getting close. I went out over the last couple of nights and took some pictures, and last night I finally managed to see and get a few blurry photos of one of the trains. Looks pretty cool. I'm excited to see light rail come to Houston.

Museum District northbound station, 27 October 2003.

This is the station closest to my apartment. (northbound line, Museum District) I took this photo on Monday, and the seats weren't installed yet, but yesterday I thought I saw them. The garbage cans have been vacuum-packed to preserve freshness. Or something like that. The southbound counterpart station (one block over) appears to be mostly finished already - I think they're still putting up some signage and finishing up safety features and electrical work, but all of the seats were there.

painted plexiglass for a roof over the station dots on the pavement

They appear to have made some questionable design choices, as illustrated by these pictures. Maybe they're just in the Museum District station, to try to be "arty." I understand the dots on the ground - within the dots, the surface of the concrete is rough for better traction - but why did they have to paint the concrete that sickly green color? The roof is interesting - it looks like painted or stained plexiglass - it definitely appears translucent, although I've only seen it illuminated from below at night so it's difficult to be sure. I'm going to go and check out a couple of other stations this weekend to see if the "painted glass" roof and colored concrete exists elsewhere.

And here are some photos of the train itself. It looks pretty sleek, and it really does run pretty quietly. Quieter than the El in Chicago, that's for sure. I think the conductor thought I was nuts. I was running after the train, and snapping photos. I obviously can't hold a camera steady. Or else I need to learn how to work the camera better. I thought I saw a couple of passengers on the train, but I guess they must have been MetroRail officials or contractors checking out the test ride.
