review: Impeach the Precedent

Here is a quick review of a compilation CD that I did for KTRU. Our internal rating scale goes from /- (really, really bad) to //+ (really, really good). Artist: Various artists Title: _Impeach the Precedent_ Label: Kajmere Sound Genre: hip-hop/funk/soul/R&B This compilation is supposed to benefit some cause or another - I don't remember which (I think it's the Rainforest Action Network), but that's not really relevant. It's a solid collection of tracks from a lot of artists that are flying _just_ under the radar, running the gamut from R&B to hip-hop to funk, although the emphasis tends to be on hip-hop. None of the tracks on here is really tremendously outstanding, but they are all solid songs with positive elements. It's a quality cd, and if you're not familiar with most of these artists, it would be a good starting point to find out if you like them or not. If you already know most of these artists, use your own discretion.
# //- (4:15) DJ Shortkut & Roy C. Hammond - _Impeach The President_ – This is a classic break by the Honeydrippers, flipped, chopped, juggled, sliced, and scratched by DJ Shortkut. # // (3:27) DJ Einstein & MC Zaakir - _Haves And Have Nots_ – Einstein of Ugly Duckling lays down a classic underground beat and scratches, and Zaakir of Jurassic 5 spits rhymes on top # // (5:52) Thes One & J-Live - _Give It Up_ – Thes One of People Under The Stairs tracks a nice organic beat and J-Live drops a very tight verse. # /+ (4:15) This Kid Named Miles & Medusa - _New Definition_ – old school funky beat with female lyrics # // (4:34) The Globetroddas – _Love_ – slow, jazzy super-smooth hip-hop jawn. Bump this and get your mack on. # //- (7:49) Jazzanova - _L.O.V.E. And You And I_ – lovely smooth downtempo joint chopped together by my favorite European DJ collective, slips into a different time signature near the end # //- (3:48) The Poets Of Rhythm - _Flight To St. Vincent_ – so funky it hurts. # //- (5:01) Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings - _What If We All Stopped Paying Taxes?_ – A bit of a misguided sentiment, but damn she’s funky. Hah! Hit me now! # //- (3:48) Damon Aaron – _Bungalow_ – chilled out little number reminiscent of Bill Withers "Lovely Day" # /+ (3:47) Blk Sonshine – _Echoes_ – soul-pop-folk number. # //- (6:50) Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra - _P.A.Z_ – solid afrofunk track # //- (4:35) People Under The Stairs - _Bomb Combo_ – back to basics hip-hop number with a nice guitar line. # //- (4:48) Crown City Rockers – _Movement_ – slower hip-hop number, some interesting horn lines. # //- (3:03) Breakestra - _Show And Prove_ – danceable funk with male vocals. The Breakestra make it sound so easy... # // (3:09) New Mastersounds – _Bullseye_ – uptempo instrumental funk. killer drum break in the middle. # // (7:41) The Rebirth - _Every Body Say Yeah_ – modern dancefloor soul with female vocals.
