I haven't spoken much lately on the political situation largely because it's so fucked up I don't know where to start. But this rumor should be food for thought for every American going into November's presidential election:
Selective Service eyes women's draft
Draft talk has been floating around for a while, largely because of the giant clusterfuck that is the current Iraqi war. April was a very bloody month for the US military - we lost more soldiers this April than in any other month of the whole conflict. Years of political positioning in the Israel-Palestine conflict have been flushed down the drain. The general Arab state is outraged about the treatment of prisoners in Iraq. The economy is in the tank, and we keep hemorrhaging money into Iraq and giving the rich tax cuts at the same time.
The most disturbing thing is that somehow, this hasn't affected W's poll ratings much. Why? I can't understand why people want a bible-thumping religious nut who clearly can't think through an issue (and ignores relevant facts) just because he's "a good guy." I would rather have an intelligent man who thinks through issues running our country than the village idiot. And Kerry isn't as wishy washy as the media makes him out to be. Everything from his military records to his voting records in the Senate point to his being a thoughtful, patriotic American who tries to evaluate all the available facts before making a decision.
So I beg of you all one more time - please register to vote if you're eligible, and please vote Democrat in November. Even if you're here in Texas, a presumably solid red state for Bush. Some of the House races here in Texas are contestable, as well as others around the nation. There are also some contestable Senate seats around the nation (neither of the Texas Senate seats are up for election this year). If worse comes to worse, hopefully we will be able to at least take back the Senate or possibly the House, which will allow us to stonewall the Bush administration should he be re-elected (please, please, please send him back to Crawford).
I loathe Bush, but I can't see myself supporting someone who voted for the Patriot Act and voted for the war. They're all so disgusting, I can't give any of these assholes my vote. Not that it will matter anyway, with our brilliant electoral college system.
And I hope they do institute a draft and pick me first, so I can give them a big Fuck You when they try to induct me.
