I started dj-ing a few years ago, shortly after moving down to Houston from Chicago for graduate school. I actually used to play in bands in Chicago as a drummer and a keyboardist for the bands Gordon Pym and Saturation, but I couldn't find anyone worth playing with here in Houston. So I picked up DJ-ing after joining KTRU and getting the shift after the 12" Sub which was hosted by Eddie ? and Theory at the time.
When I first started out, I had no idea what I was doing. I figured out the mixing part pretty rapidly; that wasn't hard - I used to be a drummer. I didn't really know the music, though. My old flatmate in Chicago got me into hip-hop, plus hanging out with Eddie and Theory helped as well. But everything else I was fairly clueless about - techno, jungle, trance, house, downtempo, acid jazz - the list goes on.
So I did everything. And I still do, to some extent. You want a junglist, a minimal techno DJ, a house DJ, a hip-hop DJ and a breaks DJ all rolled up into one? Fine. Call me. I'll even throw in eighties music, funk, and soul for good measure. What it boils down to is that to me, there are really only two kinds of music - good music and bad music.
Anyway, in my alternate life, I am a graduate student studying plant genetics. I'm trying to get my Ph.D., for what it's worth. Yes, I'm going to be the most overeducated DJ on the planet. Actually, the entire crew is.
