Alexei was the first minimal techno DJ and one of the conceptual founders of red envelope. I'm not even sure how we met anymore, although I'm certain it involved one of the following three substances: cigarettes, coffee, or beer. Lex became a good friend during the academic year 2000-2001, and I could always count on him to join me at the Gingerman for a pint. Alexei was always pushing me to be more experimental in my spinning, and we played off of each other well.
In some respects, Alexei has been a cornerstone of the Houston music scene for quite some time. He was the drummer of the acclaimed indie band Schrasj and at one time was the music editor of the Houston Public News, a now defunct free weekly which focused on the lesser known aspects of Houston life.
Alexei has moved on to NYC for graduate school, but he still remains one of my good friends, and hopefully one day we'll be able to take over the world and impose our musical tastes on everyone.
DiscographyThis is the only photo I could find of Alexei. I'm going to keep digging... he's the drummer in the lower left.
