While we are officially a DJ collective, most of the members of the crew and our affiliates have a broad range of tastes in music. As Louis Armstrong once said, 'there are only two kinds of music. Good music and bad music.'
But as a DJ crew and party collective, we focused primarily on dance music, and I use that term very loosely. Alexei was very into minimal techno (like the stuff on Hybrid, Primate, etc.), Leigh was the junglist, and I spun mostly house (that's the Chicagoan in me) and hip-hop.
However, we also love rock and roll. The first season of red envelope we had two acclaimed local bands on Ojet Records come and play - Sad Like Crazy and Port Vale. (Thanks for playing, guys.) During the fall we had two bands from Rice come and play - Gross National Product and Cousin Mary.
To encourage the love of good music, I run an email list detailing events I think you should check out in Houston. If you feel like signing up, drop me an email and I'll add you to the list. In addition, I hope to eventually get a DJ mix up here or something like that. In the meantime, here are some links to musical sites and resources that you should check out:
