prologue

This is the first in a projected series of parties that I am putting together. I am starting a collaboration with Firestation #3 in utilizing the space for an intersection of sight and sound. This first party will take place one weekend after the opening of Burning Down the Block, a photo and video exhibit.

I've been here in Houston for a while, and I have yet to find the vibe that I am looking for in a party. Maybe I'm getting old, but I want to chill out with my friends first and foremost. Dancing is good, if the music has soul, but I don't want to have to be fucked up on drugs to enjoy the music. I'm tired of going downtown and seeing everybody in the 'international clubbing outfit' of black muscle tee and black pants for men, and little black dress for women. Show some originality, will you?

Mostly, I'm interested in pushing the sounds that aren't heard anywhere else in Houston. Nu-jazz, broken beat, electroclash, and more. I DJ because I love the music. I like some esoteric sounds, and I think more people would if presented in the correct way. That's why I'm trying to get this series off the ground. I'd like to challenge people, visually and aurally. But I'd like to do it in a comfortable setting, someplace with a good vibe that makes people happy.

Anyway, for this first event, I'm bringing in an old colleague, Baby Cee, and his partner in turntable madness, Cozmos. I think they understand my vibe better than most people in this city, and I hope that everyone who shows up appreciates the technical display that they will be putting on.

As far as the party goes, we're asking for a donation, or alternatively, bring your own drinks. We'll have coolers of ice out and some beer to start, but we're not trying to turn it into an all out bash. Think lounge. In any case, it starts early enough that you can bail and head downtown to do some serious damage to your liver and lungs.

In the future, I hope to eventually webcast the event in collaboration with the Beta Lounge from San Francisco. I am also planning a furniture design exhibition for later in the summer. If you're interested in helping out, or DJing at these events, feel free to contact me.

One love,
-D.L.
